The successful excavation of the tunnel for the Chalong Underpass means the project could still meet its scheduled completion date, according to the Highways Department.
The Project Manager for the Phuket office of the Highways Department believes the Chalong Underpass could be open to traffic in April following the successful excavation of the tunnel at the site.
Somkiet Yimpong told the Phuket News that crews had already begun installing the panelling on the walls of the underpass.
"We still have to install all the fume-extraction fans, noise dampers, water pumps, lights, and other things, but overall right now the construction project stands at 76% complete,” he said.
“Once all the systems are installed we will have to go through the testing phase, but hopefully this will be all done before the end of April."
It comes as the accompanying structure in the middle of what was Chalong Circle nears completion.
Built at a cost of B3 million, the tower features a sculpture of lotus bulb at its peak, a Buddhist symbol of peace.
Mr Yimpong said elements of Buddhism were featured throughout the B546 million underpass project.
“The design was part of the plans that were approved for the project, and similar Buddhist-themed designs are being used throughout the tunnel itself,” he said.
