Airports of Thailand has forecast a 16.2% year-on-year increase in Phuket tourist arrivals over Songkran.
More than 450,000 tourists are expected to touch down at Phuket Airport during this year's Songkran festivities, according to Airports of Thailand.
The Phuket News reports that AoT President Nitinai Siriratikarn expects an average of 65,400 people per day through Phuket International Airport from April 11-17, representing an increase of 16.2% on the same period in 2018.
Mr Siriratikarn told Phuket News the airport expects to handle 2,300 flights over the seven-day period – an average of 330 flights per day, which represents a decrease of 5.8% compared with the same period in 2018.
Phuket International Airport is one of the six major airports in Thailand that are expecting a high influx of tourist arrivals over Songkran, with the others including Suvarnabhumi in Samut Prakan, Don Mueang in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai in Songkhla and Mae Fah Luang in Chiang Rai.
Last month, research from C9 Hotelworks showed that Phuket Airport hosted more than nine million arrivals last year, representing an annual increase of 8% from 2017.
The data indicates more than half the arrivals were recorded in the first half of the year, with numbers growing by 17% from the early part of 2017.
