Thailand could allow foreign tourists to visit for longer stays from October, following an announcement Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn.
Phuket could welcome foreign tourists for month-long stays from October, according to reports.
Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Reuters on Friday that tourists will have to stay for at least 30 days as part of the new requirements, with the first 14 days in quarantine in a limited vicinity of their hotel, before they can visit other areas.
The announcement comes after Thailand was named as one of seven countries that are low-risk for COVID-19 infection by the latest US Travel Advisory.
As of Thursday, August 27, the country had recorded 3,403 cases and 58 deaths from the virus (Worldometer).
According to Reuters, Yuthasak said that Phuket would be the starting point for the new tourism protocols, which include visitors having to take two coronavirus tests during quarantine before they are able to travel to the rest of the island, and being accompanied by staff in the hotel.
Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s Cabinet recently approved the extension of the country's state of emergency until September 30 to control the virus.
