The Thai Government's National Smart City Committee has outlined a plan to improve provinces such as Phuket through modern design and better technology.
Phuket has been identified by the government's National Smart City Committee as one of several zones in Thailand in the midst of a smart city transformation.
The Phuket News reports that the committee used the launch of its first call for smart city proposals to outline its vision for the future of the country.
Speaking at the event on Monday, March 11, National Smart City Committee Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister, Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong, said making existing cities smarter was a government priority, with the committee's plan noting that the process was already underway in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Bangkok, Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chachoengsao.
According to TPN, the government plans to develop 100 smart cities across Thailand by 2022.
A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information which is used to manage assets and resources efficiently.
Monday's event included the announcement of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) activities, of which Thailand is host and Chair.
Designed to showcase the best smart technology from 26 ASEAN member cities, the ASCN activities will also feature a proposal by Thailand on smart city evaluation criteria and process which will be used as implementation guidelines by ASEAN member cities.
